Planned to launch in October 2012, " The Green Deal" is a proposed UK Government policy designed with the sole purpose of improving energy efficiency of all buildings across the country.
The aim is clear - the Climate Change Act of 2008 committed the UK to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050 - a target that right now we are nowhere near to meeting.

Top tips for upgrading your home
Light bulbs: Replace all the standard light bulbs in your home with compact fluorescent ones. These energy-smart bulbs use 70-75% less energy than the incandescent kind and can last up to ten times longer.
For example, by using a 26-watt, compact fluorescent light bulb (equivalent to 100 watt incandescent), consumers can save up to £36 on energy costs over the life of the bulb, which can be anywhere from five to seven years.
Air conditioner: Clean out your air conditioner filters or replace them regularly. A dirty filter will obstruct the airflow, costing you more to run your system.
Save water: Inspect your home for leaky taps and get them repaired as soon as possible. Use cold water when washing your clothes, or choose the eco-wash option on your washing machine (if available).
Low flow showerheads: Installing these can save you up to 60% on water and energy costs. If you are living in a rented property, these showerheads can be removed and taken with to your new property.
The Zen Garden Sink: Made from polished stained concrete, it has a channel that allows the water used while washing to water a plant. Created by a young Montreal designer, the Zen Garden sink comes in single or double basin model. This would be great if plants needed toothpaste.
Thermostat: Consider installing an automated thermostat. High tech thermostats are well worth the cost, and what you spend, you will get back over time in lower energy costs. It is estimated that you can save about 3% of your heating costs for every degree you lower your heating during the winter and up to 6% for every degree you raise it during the summer.
